'Inside
Salvation Mountain'
Niland, CA. April 2006. 5x5
inch platinum/palladium print, on 8x10 inch paper.
This photograph was taken as Leonard Knight showed me around his monumental piece of religious folk art, Salvation Mountain, built over decades in the California desert on a site without running water or electricity. He told me he had recently had visitors from the architecture department of UCLA, trying to figure out how the pictured area (a dome of hay bales and adobe, held aloft by tree trunks and branches) managed to resist collapsing. Leonard seemed happy that they couldn't figure it out.
